We have left behind an exciting year, full of activities, culminating in a very successful ICAIL 2019 in Montreal and the decision to organise the next ICAIL 2021 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the first time in Latin America. All this testifies to the character of a lively community and the growing interest of the research, the public administration and the industry in AI and Law topics.
I would like to thank very much Bart Verheij, outgoing IAAIL president, for his work and for the great results, including ICAIL 2019, obtained by IAAIL under his tenure, such as:
(i) Presenting AI & Law research as a source of social, explainable and responsible methods for AI generally (Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe, Informal Advisory group Ethical, Legal, Social Issues (CLAIRE’s IAG ELS, https://claire-ai.org/))
(ii) Developing the cooperation of IAAIL with the AI and Law community in China (China spring schools in 2018 and 2019)
(iii) Presenting the AI & Law community in the international legal tech community (at Stanford, Brasilia and Sao Paulo, in Shanghai)
Bart has now joined the Nominating Committee, which also includes Katie Atkinson, Jeroen Keppens and Alexander Hudek.
I would also like to thank Anna Ronkainen, outgoing EC member after four years, for her continuous engagement in IAAIL activities.
A big thank you goes also to Anne Gardner who became EC honorary member and who will share IAAIL administrative responsibilities with Michal Araszkiewicz.
I hope we can have an intensive exchange of information through the IAAIL website, IAAIL group on LinkedIn (so actively maintained by Jack Conrad), IAAIL mailing list.
Meanwhile, I wish you all the best and a fruitful cooperation for the future.
Best regards
Enrico Francesconi
IAAIL executive committee president,
on behalf of the committee
